Cheam, surrounded in part by the ancient Roman road Stane Street, has a history that spans centuries. Its earliest recorded mention dates back to 727, when it was under the ownership of Chertsey Monastery and known as Cegeham. The origins of its name are believed to stem from a “village near the tree stumps,” reflecting its rural character. By 1086, this SM3 area was referred to as Ceiham in the Domesday Book, with Archbishop Lanfranc overseeing the settlement, which comprised a church, meadows, and woodland. The archaeological discoveries indicate the presence of potteries during the Medieval Ages. In 1259, Cheam was granted town status by royal decree from King Henry III, and a portion of the town came under the ownership of King Henry VIII in 1538, who went on to construct the Nonsuch Palace.

Nonsuch Palace, now demolished, stood on the grounds of the former Cuddington village. Compensation was paid for the destruction of Cuddington and its church. The palace was intended to be like no other building, hence its distinctive name. Its construction took approximately ten years and cost £24,000. After the death of King Henry VIII, Henry Fitzalan, the 12th Earl of Arundel, purchased the palace and completed its construction. In 1670, King Charles II bestowed the palace upon his mistress, Barbara Palmer, 1st Duchess of Cleveland. However, she demolished it just a decade later and sold off the salvaged materials to settle her gambling debts.

Nonsuch Mansion, a splendid example of Gothic Revival architecture, was built in 1743 within the enchanting grounds of Nonsuch Park. Cheam is also home to notable buildings such as St Dunstan’s Church, The Old Cottage, and Whitehall. St Dunstan’s Church, constructed in 1864 and designed by architect F. H. Pownall, holds the esteemed status of Grade II listing. Additionally, Cheam boasts the Lumley Chapel, the oldest building in the borough of Sutton, with its precise construction date still shrouded in mystery. However, evidence suggests it was built shortly after 1018.
